EDSA Included in $10.4 Million Department of Energy (DoE) Grant for Electric Power Grid Modernization and Optimization

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – November 18, 2010 – EDSA today announced that it is part of a team led by Boeing that received a $10.4 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy's (DoE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to develop the core technologies required for a next-generation national power grid. EDSA's Paladin® SmartGrid™, Paladin® Live™, Paladin® DesignBase™, and EDSA Power Analytics Gateway® software products are all being used a core technologies in the effort.

NETL is the DoE's science, technology, and energy laboratory, chartered to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States; its Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) is tasked with accelerating the deployment and integration of advanced digital systems that are needed to modernize the nation's electric delivery network for enhanced interoperability and cyber security.
The OE Smart Grid R&D Program has commissioned the Boeing-led team to "demonstrate a smart, highly-automated, secure, and self-healing electric distribution management system that will allow for integration of a greater amount of customer-owned energy resources and automation into the distribution system, increasing the value of energy resources to both end-use customers and utilities." The demonstration will be conducted on ComEd's distribution system in the greater Chicago area.

The DoE's overarching goal is to help the national power grid evolve into an intelligent energy delivery system that supports plug-and-play integration of dispatchable and intermittent low-carbon energy sources, and provides a platform for consumer engagement in load management, national energy independence, innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic security. Such a smart grid will support the best and most secure electric services available in the world and connects everyone to abundant, affordable, high quality, environmentally conscious, efficient, and reliable electric power.

"These innovative projects will greatly enhance the reliability, efficiency, and resource diversity of the nation's electric grid," said Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, PhD.  "Developing smart grid technologies will give consumers choice and promote energy savings, increase energy efficiency, and foster the growth of renewable energy resources.".

"The rapid introduction of renewable energy – and changes inherent in new intelligent devices from meters to micro grids – represents America's continued commitment to leading the world in the integration of these technologies," said Mark A. Ascolese, Chairman and CEO of EDSA. "EDSA is proud to be such an integral partner on this world-class team brought together by Boeing Energy; it is a talented, proven alliance with a broad range of experience and capability. This effort will focus the best people and the best products on developing a national power network that will help our nation achieve unprecedented levels of power reliability, quality, efficiency, and energy independence."

The Paladin family of products helps organizations ensure that their electrical power infrastructure is optimally-designed (Paladin DesignBase), performs precisely as intended in terms of reliability and energy efficiency (Paladin Live), and operates flawlessly as organizations make real-time transitions between public and on-premise power sources (Paladin SmartGrid.) By continually calibrating operating conditions with the original, as-designed CAD model the Paladin platform is the only real-time power analytics solution for diagnosing electrical power problems or energy inefficiencies at their earliest stages. EDSA coined the term "Power Analytics" to describe this process – the term now widely-used throughout the mission-critical facilities industry.
