SAN DIEGO, Calif. – March 4, 2010 – EDSA (www.edsa.com), the leading developer of power analytics solutions for the design, testing, and management of complex electrical power systems, today announced its sponsorship of the Boston Ocean Racing sailing team, as it competes in the in the 30th Annual St. Martin Heineken Regatta. The St. Martin Heineken Regatta is one of the world’s largest yacht racing events. With its challenging conditions and top prestige for the winners among the highly competitive ocean sailing community, the event is expected to draw over 200 of the top racing yachts and their race teams from around the world.
EDSA’s Chief Technology Officer, Kevin Meagher, is a member of the Boston Ocean Racing crew. Though one the most respected members of the power systems community – he was recently named among “100 People You Must Know in Smart Grid” by GreenTech Media – Kevin began sailing and racing ice boats in Michigan, and for years he has since been a competitive sailor in races all over the world.
“I’ve been sailing a lot longer than people have been talking about smart grids, and it seems to me that a racing boat is actually a pretty good example of a smart grid at work,” Kevin said. “It is very common for sailboats to have multiple generation sources including diesel engine generators, wind generators and solar panels. This mix of generation sources and their overall performance are as essential as navigation systems and drinking water (potable water) especially with the increasing amount of critical electronics required to operate in adverse conditions. You are truly “islanded” when at sea. Most sailboats have dual electrical systems, an AC system for shore power and a DC battery system while sailing. While in port, the boat draws AC power from the local utility and recharges its DC batteries; when heading our to sea, you throw the switch from “Shore Power” to “Battery Power,” and all electrical systems operate on DC power.”
“Similarly, many organizations with massive electrical power needs are trying to make their facilities, or their entire campuses, ‘dockable’ with the public power grid; this enables them to use a combination of utility power and locally-generated power, such as solar, wind, batteries, or local co-generation… or, operate autonomously, like a sailboat at sea, when necessary. These types of users are operating a lot more than just radar, a radio, and a depth finder… they are running campus-wide IT operations, environmental systems, and equipment that keep their entire organizations afloat. So even though I’ll be racing in St. Martin, I won’t be far from the problem of managing electrical power networks,” he joked.
